S.P.E. was formed in September 2001 from all of the Sumitomo Corporation Pharmaceutical business assets in Europe. SPE operates throughout Europe with offices in London, Milan and Madrid.

S.P.E. is an integral part of Sumitomo Corporation's global pharmaceutical business, with counterparts in Japan (Sumitomo Corporation Medical science department, Summit Pharmaceuticals International), USA (Sumitomo Corporation of America), and China (Summit Pharmaceuticals China) which all operate in parallel with more than 200 SC offices and subsidiaries worldwide.
